RETRO FITTING INSULATION

Retrofitting of Insulation: Roofs

Attic space.

At ceiling level:           [Heat loss through roof 35%]    SEI Grant € 250.00.

Method A.  Mineral fibre quilt fitted between the ceiling joists together with a secondary layer running in the opposite direction. The minimum uncompressed thickness to be 300 mm. giving a maximum Elemental U-Value of 0.35.*

Note: If storage and access is required purpose built walkway can be installed with 160 mm solid insulation underneath.

At pitched and hanging post positions:

Method B. “Room in roof” insulated on slope between the roof rafters using mineral fibre batts. A second layer is then applied on the underside of the rafters, [minimises thermal bridging,] together with a vapour check on the warm side of the insulation. This is all held in position by fixing a plaster slab directly on to the underside of the roof rafters.

Other materials:

  • Sheep’s wool insulation excellent product user friendly.
  • Glass fibre quilt.
  • Expanded & extruded polystyrene semi rigid.
  • Urethane foam boards
  • Polyurethane foam spray.

Simple Does & Don’ts.

Don’t restrict the “Air flow” through the attic space when insulating at ceiling level.
Don’t compress the insulation.
Don’t walk on insulation for obvious safety reasons.
Don’t insulate directly under water tank
Do employ a professional to retrofit, i.e. penny wise & pound foolish applies.
Do check contractor for compliance i.e. insurance, registration qualification etc.
Do fill all holes all cracks and holes in the ceiling prior, draft seal ceiling.
Do get a BER before and after. Great value for money. SEI Grant € 200.00.
Do insulate around water tank and associated pipe work to prevent freezing.

*U-Value is the measure of the rate of heat loss through a Building element. The lower   the value of this element the better the performance.

Retrofitting of Insulation: Walls

Cavity Wall Insulation:           [Check for wall type construction, cavity or solid.]

Walls can be retro insulated in a number of ways to achieve an acceptable U-Value. The methodology and work practice at present involves options as follows: external / internal and cavity fill.

External insulation: This system wraps the dwelling in an insulation material from the outside. Rain water down pipes, concrete window cills etc are removed / cut back and the insulation mechanically fixed to the outer wall. Sometimes it is necessary to extend the roofing system at soffit position to accommodate the additional thickness of insulation material and proprietary rendering. Planning permission may be required as the front façade of the dwelling is altered somewhat. A step in the line of sight should also be considered in the event of the dwelling being renovated is semi detached. Ideally in the case of semi detached houses both should be done together.

Internal insulation: This work is carried out to the inside of the dwelling being renovated. Typical insulated plasterboard is mechanically fixed to the walls inside to achieve the necessary improved performance. Fixed internal press units etc will have to be temporary removed to facilitate this and refixed upon completion. A drawback here would be the decreased floor space and the removal of fixed appliances and fixed units although temporarily.

Cavity fill: Using this method the cavity between the block work is pumped with insulation. The cavity should be no less than 100 mm to achieve values. Please note this system is not suitable for solid block walls, stone walls, or indeed 8 inch cavity blocks. The walls are drilled from the outside and the insulation pumped in under pressure. If the wall construction suits it is the best and most economical solution.

Grants available:

Cavity wall insulation:        € 250.00.aaY6MzDd
Internal Wall Dry Lining:    € 2,500.00.
External wall insulation:      € 4,000.00.

Minimum grant application € 500.00.

Guide Lines: Built before 1980 assume no wall insulation.
                      1980 – 1990 assume some wall insulation.
1901 Insulation a requirement by regulation.
