TIMBER FRAMETECH

Manufacturing dwellings utilising timber frame technology has many advantages over conventional block.

In the very early stages of design, systems and ultra modern technology can be incorporated within the new structure to guarantee an energy efficient home. This may prove very difficult and costly using a traditional “concrete built” process.

In any event the U-Values now required by leglislation for ultra efficient build are becoming more and more difficult to achieve irrespective of what system is used.

Timber frame is from a renewable source and should be considered seriously for any new project be it a one-off or indeed a development. The adverse impact on the environment of using concrete product should also be thought through.

Some of the advantages could be considered as follows:

1. Off site construction, more accuracy, more control, less waste, easily managed.
2. Much speedier construction = significant savings.
3. Drier method of construction = no drying out time, ie decorate immediately.
4. Accuracy of build, 90 degree corners are 90 degrees.
5. Energy efficiency of walls and roof = substantial savings on heating bills.
6. Life expectancy equal or greater than block.
7. Instantaneous “Cosy Warm Home” free of drafts.
8. Compliments Airtightness technology which is now a must have feature.

Part L of the building regulations is now very demanding in relation to methodology employed in achieving High Energy Efficient homes. In the immediate future it is clear this determination by the Government is to become even more so leading to Passive House specification shortly being the norm rather than the exception.
